Like Rise, The Sea Beneath is a painting I did at night of a church in the town of Orta san Guilio on the Italian Lakes. This is a night painting, and what that means is that I paint in the dark where I cannot really identify the colours on my palette. I can usually only see darks and lights and what I love about this process, is that the outcome is a surprise. I love that this process gives me a lot of freedom, allowing me to break away from the ways I work in daylight. This painting really captures the romantic, hopeful and dreamy atmosphere of the location.
